In May 1949, only ten months after the NHS was launched, the Chichester & Bognor Regis Old People’s Welfare Committee sponsored the Eventide Housing Association to find a way to meet the needs of old people who were not ill enough to go to hospital nor well enough to live alone.  With not a penny in the bank, a small group of people under the chairmanship of Leslie Evershed-Martin set about raising money and finding a suitable home.

In December 1950, Percie Shippam purchased Donnington House, a former maternity home and gave it to the Association in memory of his wife. After further fund raising, the first 14 residents moved into the home in January 1952 each paying £3 9s 5d per week!  This was the first care home in West Sussex.

Over the years since 1952 the home has been extended and upgraded, most recently between 2007 and 2009.  HRH Princess Alexandra has twice visited to open new wings in 1961 and 2009.  Since 1998 the home has been registered to provide nursing and residential care and today the majority of our care is nursing.

Donnington House is proud to be awarded Beacon Status, the highest award for the delivery of Care, within the National Gold Standards Framework - very few Homes across the country have Beacon Status. We continue to be a non profit making charitable Company with relatives of some of our founders on our Board of Trustees.
